Backlinks
Same as inbounds - links from one site pointing to another URL.

Bad Neighborhood
Website that's been assigned a penalty by a search engine (such as Google) for practicing black hat SEO techniques e.g. hidden links, cloaking, etc.

Banned
Means a site has been removed from a search engine's index.

Bid management tool
Software or an ASP service used to manage bids on pay-per-click search engines such as Overture.

Bidding
Placing a bid price that you are willing to pay as an advertiser on a pay-per-click search engine.

Black Hat SEO
A term referring to the practice of unethical SEO. These techniques by unscrupulous SEO's are used to gain a fast advantage over your competition, unfortunately though, the consequences can be disastrous.

Blacklist
A compiled list of hosts and/or websites which search engines may use to ban or boycott spammers from their index.

Blog
Also known as a weblog. An online diary with entries made on a regular if not daily basis.

Body copy
Actual textual content of a web page. Body copy refers to text visible to users and does not include graphical content, navigation, or information hidden in the HTML source code.

Bot
Short for robot. Often refers to a search engine spider.

Bounce rate
This defines the percentage of visitors who arrive at your website, then leave the site without visiting other pages, that is, not going any farther into the site, thus they "bounce."

Browser
Software application used to browse the internet - Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are the 2 most popular browsers.

Cache
Copies of web pages stored locally on your hard drive or within a search engine database. Can also refer to Google allowing users to view the cached version of its indexed web pages.

Cgi-bin
Refers to CGI (Common Gateway Interface) scripting that provides interactivity; could tip-off spiders that your page is dynamic.

Cloaking
A technique that shows keyword stuffed pages to a search engine, but a real page to a human user.

Conversion
Ability to convert a website visitor into a customer, or at least taking that visitor a step closer to customer acquisition.

Cookie
Information placed on your computer by a web server. While a website is accessed, data in the visitor cookie file can be stored or retrieved. Most cookies are used as unique identifiers (i.e. user IDs or session IDs).

CPC (Cost Per Click)
The amount it will cost each time a user selects your phrase or keyword and clicks on it.

Crawler
A bot from a search engine that reads the text found on a website in order to determine what the website is about.

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
Used to define the look and navigation of a website.

CTR (Click Through Rate)
The value associated with the number of times a paid ad is clicked.
